Does it mean that the developers of GNU/Linux must provide compatiblity with every piece of hardware in the world?


Quite the opposite. I'd call that solid evidence that they don't owe the market infinite backward compatibility. Nevertheless, those of lesser means will always seek out low-cost solutions like installing Ubuntu on a 10 year old laptop and they will be predictably frustrated when things don't work. When an incidental fraction of your audience is "all the world's poor and downtrodden", you're going to get a lot of people looking for solutions. To some extent that works in your favor: from those poor and downtrodden will very likely emerge some brilliant hackers and technical leaders.
